Every SUP angler has that moment — a big fish surges, the board tips, and you are suddenly swimming. Landing large fish from a paddleboard is an art that combines balance, technique, and the right equipment. Here is how the pros do it.

The Low Center of Gravity Rule

The single most important principle: get low. When a big fish is close to the board, drop to one knee or even sit down. This dramatically lowers your center of gravity and makes it nearly impossible to be pulled off balance. Many experienced SUP anglers fight the entire battle from a kneeling position when targeting large species.

Use the Board as a Pivot

Instead of fighting the fish with brute force (which pulls you toward the water), let the fish run and use your board position to apply side pressure. When the fish runs left, lean your rod tip right and let the board naturally pivot. This uses the board\'s buoyancy to your advantage rather than fighting against it.

The Lip Grip Technique

Forget traditional landing nets on a SUP — they are awkward and create balance problems. Instead, use a floating lip grip tool attached to a lanyard on your PFD. When the fish is alongside the board, reach down with the lip grip while keeping your weight centered. Secure the fish, then bring it aboard over the widest part of the board (usually the center).

Gear Modifications

Use a slightly shorter rod (6.5-7 feet) for better leverage from a seated or kneeling position. Set your drag lighter than you would on a boat — it is better to let a fish run than to get pulled in. A rod leash is essential so you can let go of the rod momentarily if you need to stabilize yourself.
